Whiteley was not the spy who loved me…

THE partner of Richard Whiteley says claims the late broadcaster worked for MI5 are ‘ridiculous’.

Actress Kathryn Apanowicz spoke out after actor Ricky Tomlinson, 77, alleged the ex-Countdown host was a spy who conspired with the government to get him jailed over a trade union dispute in the 1970s. Ms Apanowicz, 56, said Whiteley, who died aged 61 in 2005, was an ‘indiscreet technophobe’ who had asthma and drove a ‘brown Ford Escort’ not an Aston Martin favoured by 007.

‘Ricky should take a long, hard look at himself, it’s nonsense,’ she added.

Ex-Countdown co-host Carol Vorderman said she’d be ‘fascinated’ to see the evidence, saying Whiteley was a ‘mystery man’.
