Ricky Gervais’s ‘harsh’ new sitcom

RICKY GERVAIS is getting back to what he does best — playing sad middle-aged men — in his latest self-penned telly role.
The funnyman has been focusing on stand-up lately and hasn’t appeared on TV since Derek in 2014, but now he’s writing a sitcom about a divorcee who’s forced to move in with ‘an absolute loser’.
‘I shouldn’t say,’ he spilled to The Sun, ‘but the idea is I get separated from my wife and I have to move in with an absolute loser relative.
‘I’ve lost everything. I haven’t got a house, I haven’t got a job because she kept me and I was a bit of a kept man, and now I have to start dating again. It’s horrendous.
‘At 55, I’ve got to start from scratch, and all I want is her back. So it’s about me trying to cope without this life-long partner and how the real world is harsh. It’s going to be harsh.’
With just five pages written so far, we may have a while to wait before witnessing Ricky’s latest screen incarnation.
In the meantime, we just hope life doesn’t mirror art for the comedian, who has been happily partnered up with uni sweetheart Jane Fallon for 35 years.
