Meg-astar Jason Statham gets a bite at the big time

HE TACKLES a mega shark in his latest movie — and Hollywood bosses have now declared Jason Statham is a megastar after The Meg mauled the US box office on its opening weekend.

The 51-year-old Brit’s flick made £33.93million — well above expectations. It also knocked Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible — Fallout off the top spot.

With the film predicted to earn £290million, Brodie Cooper of US Entertainment PR firm JDMC said: ‘Jason Statham is now an A-lister. No one was expecting this type of performance.’ He said Jason was now ideally placed to land a lead role in a blockbuster movie.

‘It is huge for him personally,’ he added.
