Love Island’s Hayley defends Brexit gaffe

OUSTED Love Islander Hayley Hughes, who was mocked for not knowing what earlobes or Brexit are, has hit back by saying she thinks most people her age are similarly in the dark.
The 21-year-old model from Liverpool, who got the boot from the show after failing to set sparks flying with partner Charlie Frederick, admitted she didn’t understand Brexit — or, it must be said, some pretty basic biology — in conversation with ITV’s Lorraine today.
When the subject of the UK leaving the EU came up on the show last week, she was criticised for saying: ‘What’s that? I seriously don’t have a clue,’ before inexplicably adding: ‘So, does that mean we won’t have any trees?’
But Hayley defended herself today, telling Lorraine: ‘I don’t really understand, if you want me to be honest, and I really don’t think many 21-year-olds know about Brexit.
‘But obviously, because I’ve been the one to open my mouth and not just sit back, it’s me that has been judged.’
Kindly Lorraine was able to help her out on one count, though — her trees comment — as an aide to the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier has indeed tweeted about illegal logging.
Hayley also hit back at flak she took for not knowing exactly what an earlobe is, after she was tasked with licking one on the reality show.
‘What it was, in the moment,’ she said. ‘We were all playing the game and having a laugh, but I didn’t know if it was inside the ear at the time, or the earlobe. So I’ve learned something.’
She also dismissed the idea that her tense relationship with Charlie was down to sexual tension.
‘That’s a different angle altogether,’ she said, admitting that her dream for the future was to become an actress.
