Five Fast Ones: Ed Sheeran’s ex Nina Nesbitt on bad break-ups and painful gigs

What inspired your new song The Best You Had?
My friend broke up with her boyfriend recently and found out he’s seeing someone else. She internet-stalked the girl, ‘Is she prettier than me? Is she better than me?’ Her pride had been hurt and I’ve definitely been in that situation as well.
Have you ever taken revenge on an ex?
When I was younger, I’d always be raging but now I’m more like, ‘Whatever, your loss’. I’ve had a boyfriend for three years so he hasn’t had to deal with any of that.
Tell us about your makeover, going from blonde to brunette…
My debut album Peroxide was young and fun, whereas this one is a lot more honest and stripped back. It kind of matches the hair, if that makes any sense.
Can you remember your worst gig?
T In The Park in front of 10,000 people. It was a really big gig for me, a home gig. I was so nervous that I came in at the wrong key — it was so bad. Another time I was bashing this tambourine, it was a steel drum kit one, and my thumb ended up having this huge lump on it…
What is your most treasured item?
My new puppy, Timmy. He’s a Pomeranian and we’ve just set up his Instagram account!
