Elton John shares ex-wife’s pain to rally Aussie equality voters

SIR Elton John has reminded Australian marriage equality voters why it’s important for LGBT+ people to be themselves, recalling his own marriage to a woman.
The Rocket Man, 70, who wed Renate Blauel in Sydney in 1984, revealed the damage their union did, as he felt he was forced to stay in the closet until they split in 1988.
‘I wanted more than anything to be a good husband but I denied who I really was, which caused my wife sadness, and me huge guilt and regret,’ he wrote in an emotional Instagram post.
Sir Elton, now wed to David Furnish, added: ‘To be worthy of someone’s love, you have to be brave and clear-eyed enough to be honest with yourself and your partner.’
On tour Down Under, he said gay marriage was an ‘expression not of desire but of love’.
