Dwayne Johnson recreates hilarious 1990s look

WE’VE all got an embarrassing picture or two of outfits and haircuts we wish we hadn’t worn, but Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson posted a shot today that’s hilariously bad on both counts.

The snap, from 1996, features the Baywatch star with a full head of curls, a bum bag (aka ‘fanny pack’ in the US) and bling chain slung proudly around a turtleneck.

The effect is, in Dwayne’s own words, ‘like a bad ass buff lesbian’.

Funnier still is the fact that alongside the shot he recreates the look to perfection — minus the barnet.

But Dwayne wasn’t just having a bit of fun at his own expense — he used the photo to make a serious point.

‘When I took this iconic absurdity of a picture in 1996, I was one year removed from sleeping on a used mattress I took from a garbage dumpster in the back of an hourly sex motel,’ he wrote.

‘Couldn’t afford to buy a bed so we do what we gotta do to get by. You can imagine all the fun colourful bodily fluids I tried my best to clean off.

‘Twenty-one years later I’m taking the same photo backstage hosting #SaturdayNightLive for the fifth time.

‘If you’re going thru your own tough times “used mattress” stage, do your best to have faith things’ll get better and always be willing to outwork your competition because you never know where life is gonna take you.’

But Dwayne couldn’t resist mocking himself in conclusion, writing: ‘And ALWAYS remember to place a soft tissue under your left elbow [so] as to protect the fabric of the cheap ass swag turtleneck that had you out here looking like a bad ass buff lesbian.

‘Oh and tuck the thumb in the fanny pack. Always tuck the thumb.’
