Billie Lourd opens up on mum Carrie Fisher’s drug death

BILLIE LOURD has hailed her mother as a lifelong campaigner against the ‘social stigmas’ of drug addiction and mental illness — after it emerged Carrie Fisher had taken drugs in the days leading up to her death.
A coroner’s report, released yesterday, revealed the much-loved Star Wars actress had traces of heroin, cocaine and MDMA in her system when she died after a heart attack on board a flight on December 27 last year.
But Billie said her mother would want her death to encourage others ‘to be open about their struggles’.
‘My mom battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life. She ultimately died of it,’ she said in a statement given to People magazine on Monday.
‘I know my Mom,’ she added, ‘she’d want her death to encourage people to be open about their struggles. Seek help, fight for government funding for mental health programs.
‘Shame and those social stigmas are the enemies of progress to solutions and ultimately a cure. Love you Momby.’
