What was the thinking behind Dial Dan?
My latest single Away From Today (out now) is about stepping away from what you’re doing. I wanted to give my fans a direct line to me, so they could escape/chat for as long as they wanted to.
Did you take any particularly difficult calls?
One of the more shocking calls was from a girl from Tel Aviv. She had been offered her dream job in another country and was thinking about taking it, but was worried about a rise in hate crime there due to the developments of right-wing political parties. She had large Star of David tattoos on each wrist and was having to think about hiding her own personal beliefs. It hit me pretty hard.
What is your best form of therapy?
Exercise — it’s easy for me to get bogged down in a studio or on the road so I tend to jump at every chance to go outside.
You’ve crossed paths with Sir Paul McCartney in the past. What surprised you the most about him?
The amount of times he would say ‘groovy’ in a sentence was quite surprising!
Can you single out the most rock’n’roll moment from your career so far?
That I get to travel the world, play to a lot of people, make records and live off music. Less booze, drugs and name dropping than most artists, but there’s still time…
